Leveraging Your Content to Monetize Your Blog (video)
During Blogalicious 2011, I had the pleasure of hosting a workshop with Pam Perry, social media expert and creator of Ministry Marketing Solutions. For our session Pam and I decided to discuss one of those hot button topics for many bloggers, “How do you make money from your blog?”
On the topic of blog monetization most bloggers lean towards the three A’s: Adsense, Advertisers, or Affiliate Marketing. Usually bloggers think of these areas first because they are the most commonly used, widely known for being easy to setup, and many are hoping to mirror the success of popular bloggers who have used at least one of these solutions to make a lot of money. As you and a million others have discovered, the money doesn’t just start to pour in when you set up your first Adsense campaign. Affiliate programs don’t help much if people aren’t buying the stuff you are trying to promote. And you can’t make advertiser money if no advertisers are expressing interest in your website.
When it comes to the three A’s you put a lot of your profit power into the hands of everyone because you have to wait for something to happen. You have to wait for traffic, wait for affiliate clicks, and wait for advertiser interest. But if you are trying to make some extra money on the side or even figure out how to turn your blog into a business, who has time to wait? Four years ago when I had a newborn baby and a family to feed I knew that I didn’t have time to wait or waste, so I learned how to focus on the Big “C” – my Content.
If you have a blog with content and a growing list of subscribers, one way you can make money from your space is to monetize your content. In other words, turn your content into tangible or digital products that you can sell to your audience. And by doing so, you can take back your profit power. When you sell your own stuff you don’t have to wait for anyone to create a revenue generating opportunity for you. Moreover, when you sell your own stuff you tap into the unlimited profit potential of your content.
During our blog monetization session Pam and I discussed the 5 most common information products that bloggers can create. They are ebooks, print books, audio series, virtual training packages, and/or continuity programs. We defined each option, discussed the pros and cons of each, and how to figure out which product model is right for you.
