Target marketing is all about two things. You have to clearly define what you are selling. Then you have to really think about the kind of person who would benefit from buying your product. If you are having trouble defining your target market it is possible that you haven’t clearly defined what it is that you are trying to sell.
For example, if you want to sell diaper cakes. Your target audience would be comprised of pregnant women and people looking for gifts for baby showers. You can narrow that list down by adding things like location, style, and niche.
Another example, let’s say your goal is to sell environmentally safe cleaning products. What kind of products specifically are you selling? Are they good for cleaning the home or cleaning a car? If they are good for the home, that might be great for moms, but what kind of moms? Perhaps moms who care about the environment, but why should they care about your product?
What is your hook? Is your product cheaper than top competitors on the market? Is it better? Can you give them ideas on how to incorporate Green living into their busy lifestyle?
Effective target marketing strategies are built on knowing exactly what you want to sell and who should buy it. Once you have an idea of who should buy your stuff, start writing down different reasons why they should buy (these are your selling points). As you define your target market, you need to figure out where they go online, similar products they use and why they like to use them.
The more you know about your target market the better. You can promote your business on spaces they frequent. You can use their questions or requests as part of your marketing material. You can show them how and why your product meets their needs by having a solid understanding of exactly what they are looking for.
