Web Sites Address Black Job Crisis

Columbus, OH (BlackNews.com) – Everyone has heard the news that America is heading for a recession. The housing market has burst, unemployment is at an all-time high and major companies are filing bankruptcy and going out of business. Many Americans are concerned about job security and those searching for jobs are finding it harder to land employment in a tightening economy.

Every week, hundreds of thousands of people are filing for unemployment benefits and according to the Associated Press – the national unemployment rate has climbed to 5.1 percent. With staggering numbers like this, African Americans are feeling the crunch and need resources dedicated to helping them find jobs.

Dante Lee and William Moss, business partners and online media pioneers, saw this need within the African American community and partnered together to give job seekers the most comprehensive way to apply to companies specifically looking to hire diverse employees. Lee and Moss both own sites that cater to the Black community, but are now using their companies to help the Black economy.

Moss owns HBCU Connect, a social networking site for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He has launched the HBCU Connect Career Center (http://jobs.hbcuconnect.com) designed to help HBCU students and alumni find internships and jobs. Lee started BlackNews.com as a way for Black professionals to get news that was relevant to them. The BlackNews.com Career Center (http://jobs.blacknews.com) was designed to help those same professionals find jobs. In order to make the sites more effective, Lee and Moss decided to combine their resources and databases allowing users on either site to see more job postings.

Right now, the site has over 140,000 job seekers on the site and more than 200 companies posting job opportunities specifically for African Americans. Some of the bigger companies include Verizon, Liberty Mutual, Merck Pharmaceuticals, and the Department of State.

People interested in joining the Career Center on HBCUconnect.com or BlackNews.com, can visit either site and sign up for free. Members can upload their resume and search available job openings.

Companies interested in posting jobs to the Career Center should contact Jonathan Carter at jecarter@hbcuconnect.com or (410) 961-2456.
